Here are some suggestions on what you can do to help your child know these words:
1. Write each word on an index card and use them as flash cards. Introduce only six or so words at a time. As your child learns a word, replace it with a new word. Be sure that you often review the words you replaced so that by the end of the year, he/she knows all the Sight Words.
2. Make a Memory game out of the sight words. Prepare 12 index cards with a different sight word, and then make a duplicate set. Turn the cards face down and take turns trying to find a match. Before someone can take a match, they must be able to say the word.
3. Make a Go-Fishing game with the sight words. Prepare 24 index cards with a different sight word, and then make a duplicate set. To begin, one person deals seven cards each to themselves and the other player. Then he/she places the remaining cards face down to form a draw pile. Each player places all his/her matching pairs of sight words on the table. Player one begins by asking player two for a sight word to match one that he/she is holding. If he/she receives a match from player two, he/she places the pair on the table and goes again. If player two does not have the card, he/she says, "Go Fish", and player one draws a card from the pile. If he/she draws a match, he/she lays down the pair and takes another turn. If he/she does not draw a match, he/she keeps the card and player two takes a turn. Any time a player lays his/her last card on the table, he/she takes one card from the draw pile. When the draw pile is gone, the game ends. The player with the most pairs wins the game.
