First Day of 2015-2016 School Year
Activities we did to make connections to some books we read the first week of school
Last Fall I took my daughter to High Point University to a Lego day. I thought I would be bored but did it because it was a way to spend time with her doing something she liked. Little did I know that I would leave with a whole new idea to teaching. I went in a parent workshop and found out about Learn2Learn packs. I immediately started thinking of ways I could get these for my class. With the help of a great-aunt and cousin from one of my student's last year, I was able to purchase these for my class. We did our first lesson, for this school year, Friday, Sept 4th. Before the lesson, the students were given to time to explore the bricks and make what they wanted to make. The smiles on those adorable faces lets you know the Legos were a big hit!!
After the students had the opportunity to explore their Lego packs, we joined together on the carpet. This week during Social Studies, we have been discussing communities and community helpers. I had the students name buildings and places we could see in a community. I then had the students go and make the place they named. We borrowed my son's train table to build our community. The children did an awesome job and learned the lesson I was trying to teach in a creative way. We will be using our Lego pack again and I am hoping to purchase Legos that focus on math concepts.
